Selecting the Right Pole for Your Solar Street Light Installation

May 08, 2025

With the concept of sustainable development becoming more and more popular, solar street lights have become an important choice for modern lighting due to their green, energy-saving and efficient features. However, a good solar street light system not only depends on efficient solar panels and lamps, but also the right pole plays a decisive role. As the “backbone” of the solar street light system, the correct choice of the pole directly affects the safety, stability and service life of the whole system. In this article, we will analyze in detail how to choose the right solar street light poles from multiple key dimensions.

Understand the role of poles in solar street lights

Solar street light poles are not simple support structures, they are responsible for fixing lamps, solar panels, batteries, and even GNSS control cabinets and antennas and other components. Once the pole is not properly selected, it may cause the structure to collapse, leading to lighting failure, and the subsequent replacement and maintenance costs will also increase significantly. Therefore, when selecting a pole, durability and compatibility with the system must be a top priority. Do not sow the seeds of safety hazards and long-term financial burdens for the sake of immediate cost savings.

Material of the pole

Galvanized steel

Galvanized steel is hot-dipped galvanized to provide a uniform and dense layer of zinc on the surface of the steel. This layer of zinc acts as a strong armor that effectively prevents air and moisture from coming into contact with the steel and greatly enhances the steel's ability to resist rusting. Even in the humid and rainy southern regions, or in the northern roads where salt is frequently spread in winter to remove snow, galvanized steel light poles can be maintained in good condition for a long time. This material has excellent strength, can easily withstand the weight of the solar panels and lamps, even when hit by strong winds, can also be firmly supported.

As a result, galvanized steel poles are ideal for most conventional outdoor lighting scenarios, whether it's a tall streetlight on a city artery or a relatively low profile light fixture on a country road, due to their reliability and ability to provide a stable support for solar streetlight systems, often with a life expectancy of 15 - 20 years.

Aluminum

Aluminum's density is only about one-third of that of steel, a feature that makes aluminum light poles significantly lighter, eliminating the need for large-scale lifting equipment during installation and requiring only a small amount of labor to complete the handling and installation, which greatly reduces the difficulty of installation and labor costs; in the transportation segment, the advantage of lightweight also makes it possible for transport vehicles to load more light poles, effectively reducing transportation costs. Although the strength of aluminum is not as strong as steel, but it has good corrosion resistance, thanks to the aluminum surface in the air can quickly form a layer of dense alumina film, blocking further oxidation. Aluminum light poles can be used in places that do not require high load-bearing capacity, such as community walkways, small parking lots, and school trails, where aluminum can be used to meet the needs of lighting installations and harmonize with the surrounding environment by virtue of its simplicity.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel contains a large number of chromium, nickel and other alloying elements, which work together to give it excellent corrosion resistance. In coastal areas, the high concentration of salt in the air, as well as the complex pollutants in industrial areas, are difficult to stainless steel light poles to cause substantial damage. Street lights in coastal cities, for example, long-term exposure to sea breeze and salt spray erosion, other materials may appear rust, deformation and other problems, but the stainless steel light poles can still maintain a clean and new appearance and sturdy structure.

In addition, stainless steel light poles have a smooth surface and a metallic luster, through different processing techniques, can also show a mirror, brushed and other diverse effects, with a high degree of ornamental. Because of this, it is often used in areas with requirements for environmental aesthetics, such as high-grade commercial areas, urban landscape boulevards, wetland parks, etc., which not only ensures the stable operation of the solar street light system, but also serves to beautify the environment.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass poles are lightweight and strong, especially suitable for use in areas where extreme weather such as high winds and heavy rains occur frequently. At the same time, fiberglass is a non-conductive material, in some close to the power facilities, there are electrical safety hazards, the use of fiberglass poles can effectively avoid electrocution and other safety accidents, for the safe operation of the solar street light system to provide protection.

Structural specifications: diameter, wall thickness, and wind resistance

The structural specifications of the pole directly determine its strength and stability, mainly involving three key indicators: Upper and Lower Diameters, Wall Thickness, and Wind Resistance:

Upper and lower diameters

Upper and Lower Diameters The diameter of the pole plays a key role in its stability. Generally speaking, for a pole with a height of 6 - 8 meters and a load of 20 - 30kg, an upper diameter of 60 - 70mm and a lower diameter of 140 - 160mm can meet the stability requirements under wind speeds of 120 - 140km/h. For highway applications with a height of 10 - 10 meters, the upper and lower diameters of the pole can meet the stability requirements under wind speeds of 20 - 30kg. For highway applications, poles up to 10 - 12 meters in height, with higher wind loads and heavier components (40 - 50kg) require larger diameters, e.g. 80 - 100mm upper diameter and 180 - 220mm lower diameter.

Calculated Based on Actual Wind Load

Wall thickness

Wall thickness is closely related to the strength, cost and weight of the pole, with standard wall thicknesses of 2 - 2.5mm for 3 - 4m poles, 3 - 4mm for 6 - 8m poles and 4 - 5mm for 10 - 12m poles in windy areas. stainless steel poles, due to their strength, can be slightly thinner (2mm) for lighter loads (e.g. garden lamps, generally up to 4m in height) but need to be carefully designed to prevent buckling and deformation. A slightly thinner wall thickness (2mm) can be used, but careful design is required to prevent buckling and deformation.

Wind resistance

Wind loads are calculated by taking into account the height of the pole, the surface area of the assembly and the local wind speed, using standards such as ASCE 7 or EN 40. For example, a 6-meter-long stainless steel pole with a wall thickness of 3.5 mm and a diameter of 60/150 mm with a 0.5 square meter solar panel can withstand wind speeds of 120 km/h. In hurricane-prone areas, wind loads can be calculated based on the surface area of the module and the local wind speed. In hurricane-prone areas, a pole with a wall thickness of 4 - 5mm and a larger diameter (e.g. 70/180mm) should be selected to increase wind resistance.

Pole height and application

Small Parking Lots: Typically a 15 - 20 foot (4.5 - 6 meter) pole is required to meet the lighting needs. This type of parking lot area is small, the lower height of the pole can provide uniform lighting, convenient vehicle parking and people walking, but not too high to produce glare, affecting the surrounding residents rest.

Large commercial parking lots: Due to the large size, pole heights of 25 - 35 feet (approximately 7.5 - 10.5 meters) are often required to ensure that there are no dead spots. Higher light poles expand the lighting coverage area, making vehicles visible from all corners, ensuring nighttime parking safety, and enhancing the overall image of the parking lot.

Athletic Fields: Light poles are often 40 - 70 feet (12 - 21 meters) high to ensure adequate lighting throughout the field. The frequent activities of people in the sports scene and the high light requirements of sports programs, higher light poles with professional lamps can eliminate shadows and provide a good visual environment for athletes and spectators.

Design and aesthetic considerations

In urban and residential environments, the design and appearance of light poles should not be overlooked. Common styles of light poles include traditional, contemporary and decorative. For example, in historical and cultural districts, traditional style light poles can complement the surrounding environment; in modern commercial centers, simple modern style light poles can reflect a sense of fashion; and in some landscape areas, decorative light poles can play a role in beautifying the environment. When choosing the design of the light pole, it is necessary to ensure the structural stability of the premise, so that it is coordinated with the surrounding environment, to achieve the perfect unity of function and aesthetics.

Choosing the right solar street light pole requires comprehensive consideration of the material, structural specifications, height and design aesthetics and other factors. From the durability and applicability of the material to the strength and stability of the structure specification; from the matching of the height of the pole with the application scenario to the coordination of the design with the environment, each link is crucial. Only by comprehensively and meticulously considering these factors can we select the ideal pole for the solar street light system, ensure its long-term stable and efficient operation, and light up the nights of cities and villages reliably and beautifully.
